What Makes Avion Reserva 44 Extra Añejo Special

Avion produces several different types of tequila, with the Reserva 44 being one of their premium, top-shelf tequilas, along with the Avion Reserva Cristalino, which is exquisite in its own right.

Extra añejo tequila is a type of tequila that has been aged for at least 36 months. In the case of Avion Reserva 44, the number 44 represents the number of months the tequila is aged in oak barrels. This is longer than many other extra anejo tequilas on the market.

Does aging tequila an additional month or two (or more) really matter? According to our palates, it does. In the name of being completely honest, we’re not always crazy about extra anejo tequila

Because of the extra time spent in oak barrels, the tequila can take on the notes of the wood to the point that they really begin to overpower the flavors of the spirit and change the personality entirely. If you’ve stayed away from extra anejo tequilas for this reason, Avion 44 Extra Añejo Tequila offers something that might change your mind.

Avión Reserva 44 is produced in small batches, and after spending 43 months in the original barrels, it is then aged in specially selected petite barrels. The barrels are then rotated daily for a month. The unique finishing process of Reserva 44 Extra Anejo is what creates such a rich flavor experience with each bottle.

It’s also what makes this tequila one that is preferably sipped rather than mixed in cocktails, but there’s no harm in leveling up your margarita or palamo with the notes of honey and hints of ripe, luscious fruits that live just below the surface with Avion Reserva 44 Extra Añejo Tequila.

Profile

Color

The color of Avion Reserva extra añejo tequila is warm, reminding us of the color of almonds or honey. The liquor does pick up some reddish hues of dark amber from the barrel it’s aged in, but the color isn’t too saturated. Once poured into a glass, it resembles light, golden caramel.

Nose

Before giving Avion Reserva 44 Extra Añejo a taste, you don’t want to pass up the opportunity to explore its nose. It offers something once poured into a glass that you can’t pick up while it’s still in the bottle.

There’s a noticeable scent of roasted agave that plays with warm vanilla and almond. Our sampling companion picked up on a bit of spice and hazelnuts in the mix.

Tasting Notes

We love the complex tasting notes of this spirit. First, there’s an excellent roasted flavor from the roasted agave that plays with oak, but neither is overpowering.

There are notes of vanilla and caramel with the first sip. At the finish, we noticed more complex fruity flavors. We picked up sweet apple flavors, pineapple, and the slightest hint of citrus.

It’s a wonderful bottle for sipping, but the flavor does go well in some cocktails. The Avion website offers a few recipes specifically for this bottle.

ABV

Avion Reserva 44 has an ABV of 40% and is 80 proof. This is standard for fine tequilas. Always drink responsibly!

Awards

Avion 44 has won numerous awards. These include:

  • 2019 SIP Awards

How To Drink Avion Reserva 44 Extra Añejo

In our opinion, along with the opinion of other reviews we’ve read, Avión Reserva 44 Extra Añejo Tequila is, without a doubt, made for sipping. Poured into a glass, this tequila is made to be lingered over. This isn’t one of those tequilas that should be used for shooters. Of course, you can, but you’d be missing out on all the rich and complex notes each bottle offers.

That said, there are plenty of people out there who prefer extra anejo tequila but don’t care much for drinking it straight. If this sounds like you, know that the bit of sweetness and citrus that you can taste in Avion Reserva 44 does lend itself nicely to certain cocktails, including margaritas.

We would say if you are going to use this in cocktails, make sure the other ingredients are high-quality as well. You wouldn’t want to ruin the cooked agave, subtle oak, and hints of vanilla by using inferior ingredients.
